About the Story: Man Buries Father in BMW Car

The ‘heart-touching’ picture message is in circulation on social media since at least June 2018. Accompanying photograph appears to show a group of people helping in burying the BMW car in a local graveyard. The shocking incident is described with a reason; the rich Nigerian man honored his late father burying him in an exotic new car. Accordingly, his father’s dead body was put six feet under in a brand new BMW as replacement for a coffin.

Consequently, many readers believed the story about burying the luxury SUV is real and it went viral on social media. Some online and media outlets around the world also bought the story and went on to publish the same. On the other hand, the story also caused a stir on social media as several netizens commented in sarcasm and criticism. Some said buy the car while your father is still alive and others said it’s a waste of money, which could have been put to better use.

Scene from Movie, Not a Real Burial

Although the story about the unusual, costly burial went viral online, there is lack of detailed information around the incident. While many netizens believed the incident is real, few commented it is a comedy and probably from a movie. The photograph is in fact from a Nigerian film.

Nigerian filmmaker and artist Zevi Gins shared the story originally on Facebook on 10th June 2018. After the false claim went viral, Facebook user Ifedi Michael commented the still is from a movie, the shoot of which is going on in Asaba. He also revealed the girl crying while holding the car is Nollywood actress Richeal Ogbonnaya. In response, Richeal Ogbonnaya commented she’s ‘tired of explaining’ it to bloggers writing the false narrative.
