Fact Check:
A worrying video is doing rounds on social media alleging to show hundreds of patients crowding at Victoria Hospital, Bengaluru. Some versions also called it the Out Patient Department (OPD) at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi. Although the video is real, it is not from Bengaluru or Delhi – it is from AIIMS, Patna.
About the Video of Hundreds of Patients Crowding at Hospital OPD
The video shows a Dr. Rana Singh recording the crowd gathering at hospital OPD, reporting it to higher authority and pleading for help to take immediate action. “Ma’am, this is amount of rush we are getting at room no. 5 OPD ground floor. Looking at the amount of patients here, it is a complete threat to all the doctors and staff of the hospital, including the patients,” he says in the video. The crowd with masks, more than hundred in numbers is standing in front of OPD, struggling to get inside – not observing social distancing norms amid COVID-19 global pandemic.
The video viral on social media is real and shows overcrowded outpatient department of a hospital, but it does not mention the name. However, it is doing rounds with various attributions like it is from Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru, Delhi’s Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital (RML) and AIIMS Patna.
Video from AIIMS, Patna
Social & Political Scientist Sanjay Yadav shared the video earlier on 16th July 2020 saying health infrastructure in Bihar is dilapidated. Later, after the video went viral with false claims, Bangalore Mirror clarified the matter on 18th July. Their Twitter post mentioned Dr CR Jayanthi, Director-cum-Dean of AIIMS Patna saying the video is in fact from their medical institution.
So, video is not from Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru or RML Hospital in New Delhi. It in fact shows hundreds of patients swarming AIIMS, Patna. On the other hand, on 19th July 2020 City Crime Branch (CCB) police of Bengaluru arrested Sameer Ullah (46), a resident of Tilaknagar for sharing the video with false claims saying it was from Victoria Hospital, Bengaluru. As of this writing, Bengaluru is significantly seeing a surge in people contracting the Coronavirus, COVID-19.
