The message in question is doing rounds on social media sites, in various versions and languages. It tells the people traveling on National Highways of India to Pay for 12 Hours at Toll Booth and Save Money. The alleged announcement from Indian Government official Nitin Gadkari says if you come back within 12 hours, there is no toll. Pay for 12 Hours at Toll Booth?

People traveling on the national highways of India usually pay the toll tax depending on their journey, whether it is one way or two way (return). National Highways Authority of India levies the toll tax amount based on the journey. The message in question appears online as a new rule on toll tax announced by Nitin Gadkari, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India.

To verify whether you can really pay for 12 hours at toll booth and save money, we checked various sources. As told in the message, we did not find any option or information about such 12-hour journey and user toll tax for it. There’s no credible information on it, neither in media or official government websites. The Minister Nitin Gadkari usually shares important announcements on his official Twitter account. When some users mentioned him asking about the claim, there is no response.

We came across a letter of National Highways Authority of India dated March 2018 mentioning about revision of user fee rates for the year 2018-19 in a Karnataka area. The letter only mentions Toll Fee for single journey, return journey within a day, and for monthly pass for 50 single journeys in a month. There’s no mention of 12 hours slip option whatsoever.
