Fact Check:
Certain messages doing rounds on various social media platforms and WhatsApp claim Telangana Police Launch a Free Ride scheme for Women in Distress at Night. They say alone or stranded women anywhere can call the police helpline numbers 1091 or 7837018555 between 10pm-6am & request for a free vehicle to drop her safely at her destination. The claims, however, are mixture of hoax and facts explained here.
Various Police Launch Free Ride Scheme for Women Safety
Firstly, the message circulating widely on social media is not pertaining to Telangana Police – it is in fact a new scheme from Ludhiana Police. In early December 2019, Ludhiana Commissionerate launched the free-ride scheme for women who are alone and fail to find a ride in odd/night hours. Amid growing concerns over women safety, Ludhiana Police of Punjab started the initiative for women in distress during night hours. The Commissioner of Police also said the free ride scheme for women was in the pipeline for some time.
Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh also tweeted about the free police help for women in Punjab.
Later on Nagpur Police also took up similar initiative with different numbers asking women to dial 100, 1091 or 07122561103 for free ride between 9pm-5am.
Pilot Project in Telangana
After Punjab and Nagpur, Telangana cops also decided to introduce similar scheme as a pilot project. Officials of the Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda police commissionerates are working to implement free ride for women unable go home at night.
Police Women on Wheels (WoW) patrol the Hyderabad city on bikes
Hyderabad police have already started deploying women for patrolling and handling women-related issues. The teams called Women on Wheels (WoW) patrol the city on bikes. In the pilot project, the police Women on Wheels will pick up and drop women based on calls to 100. This will happen in coordination with SHE Teams operating across all the districts of Telangana. Women in distress can also call the concerned SHE teams available on WhatsApp.
On the other hand, Hyderabad police maintains a Citizen-friendly mobile-APP called Hawk Eye to be in touch with police always. In the light of rape-and-murder of a young veterinarian, Hyderabad police updated the app to help distressed women in any area. When you press SOS button in the app, an automatic call will go to Dial100 even without internet.
So, the women in need at night hours can feel free to contact the concerned police and take their help in reaching their destination safely.
