Various messages doing rounds heavily on social media warn Indian citizens about RBI taking back Rs 2000 Notes and releasing New Rs 1000 Notes. They claim Reserve Bank of India is releasing new 1000 rupees notes on 1st January 2020 and taking back all the 2000 rupees notes. They also claim people can exchange only 50,000 rupees and tell them to do it immediately; adding the last date of it is 31st of December 2019. No, the claims are not at all true.
RBI Not Discontinuing 2000 Rupees Notes
The claims in question are doing rounds heavily on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp groups among others. However, the viral messages do not carry any credible citation to refer. There is no such notice or information on Reserve Bank of India website rbi.org.in about RBI discontinuing the current 2000 rupees notes or plans of releasing new 1000 rupees notes. There are also no credible news outlets reporting it. Note, back in November 2016, new 2000 rupee banknotes were introduced after demonetization of 500 and 1000 rupee currency notes. Moreover, in response to related query, RBI spokesman told Mumbai Mirror that there’s no such plan.
So, the messages warning Indian citizens about RBI discontinuing Rs 2000 notes and releasing new Rs 1000 notes are just hoaxes. Earlier in September 2019 also a fake news spread on social media stating RBI is shutting down 9 commercial, public sector Banks in India.
Update: 19th October 2019
We came across some stories on WhatsApp, Facebook and other online platforms alleging to show new 1000 rupees notes released by Reserve Bank of India, RBI.
Again, RBI did not release a new thousand rupees note. The pictures doing rounds on social media are fake and in fact – an Artistic Imagination – as mentioned on top right of it. Other hints of fake note are the unusual print pattern unlike regular new notes, old ‘year 2017’ printed on it, and signature in the name of M K Gandhi instead of RBI governor.
