Fact Check:

A picture message viral on WhatsApp and other social platforms claims to show Indian sage Potuluri Veerabrahmendra Swami Predicted Coronavirus Outbreak in his Kalagnanam. The picture appears to show a print of the Kalagnanam (knowledge of time) saying of the popular sage. Yes, the claims are true.

Veerabrahmendra Swami Predicted Coronavirus Outbreak?

The poem in Telugu language translates to saying Poisonous gas will take birth in North-East, killing lakhs of people. It goes on to call the disease Koranki will affect crore people who will die shivering like a hen. Likewise, the viral message suggests Koranki disease refers to Coronavirus and to the North-East of India is China, where the virus broke out in Wuhan.

Some online outlets reported about the viral message doing rounds through WhatsApp and other social media platforms. They suggest the prediction of Indian sage Veerabrahmendra Swami appears as 114th padyam (poem) in his Kalagnanam. To check the authenticity of the alleged prediction of famous Veerabrahmendra Swami, we searched both online and offline.

We in fact found the same poem on page 41 of a Telugu book titled ‘Shri Veerabrahmendra Swamulavaaru, Bhakti Maargam,’ which describes time, wisdom and self-awareness.

So, the poem in question is in fact a prediction from Kaalagnanam of Veerabrahmendra Swami. Considering the symptoms and outbreak of Coronavirus in China, the prediction can be associated to the same. Note, the predictions of Veerabrahmendra Swami from Kaalagnanam are generally abstract in nature and appear as poetry or riddles. For instance, one prediction said Images on the screen would rule countries. Likewise, many Cinema actors have become political leaders and are ruling countries.
