Several stories and certain media reports warn Indians of 13 Digit Mobile Number change starting from July 2018. It is said that all existing 10-digit mobile numbers will be changed to 13-digit numbers by October 2018. Nonetheless, the claims about 13 Digit Mobile Number Change are not true.

Actual Change
In early 2018 the Department of Telecommunications (DoT, India) issued a directive to Telecom Service Providers to implement 13-digit numbering scheme for M2M (machine-to-machine) communication. Notably, M2M services relate to Internet-enabled electronic devices that communicate through a SIM card. For instance, they include swipe machines, cars, electricity meters and latest refrigerators. Essentially, it is a part of direct communication among electronic devices. As a matter of fact, the 13-digit numbers for SIM-based machine-to-machine (M2M) services will co-exist with 10-digit numbers. Shown below is a related letter that also circulated online.

Not 13 Digit Mobile Number Change
In effect of the DoT (Department of Telecommunication) order, certain media outlets misinterpreted the change for machine to machine or M2M numbers. There were rumors about your mobile number having 13 digits (from 10 digits currently) from 1 July 2018. That is, the government of India shall change the numbers of the mobile phone users in India. However, the reports are not true, the change will not affect your mobile numbers. So, relax, there is no 13-digit mobile number plan coming up for you, you will continue to have your 10-digit numbers.
