A story doing rounds online, heavily on social media sites, claims that the state-owned telecom operator in India Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has introduced a new 3G data offer in which prepaid customers will get 20GB data for just Rs.50. The too good (to be true) offer sounded interesting as several websites reported the same and because of the social media sharing it started to trend online. The claims, however, are not facts.

The plenty of posting on social media stated that BSNL is launching the unbelievable 20GB of 3G data offer for just Rs 50 to beat every other operator out there. Some claimed that the offer came as a subsidy thanks to Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Digital India’ initiative. There was also something more unrealistic; that the plan could also be shared among five friends with the other four using the data for free.

As many would have suspected, the hard to believe news spread by some unknown sources was a hoax. There has been no official statement from BSNL launching any such offer. “BSNL has not officially declared any offer like 20GB 3G data for Rs 50 and neither does the company intends to do so,” a source confirmed to The Times of India (timesofindia.indiatimes.com).
