Fact Check:

According to a message doing rounds on social media, you can find the radiation level of your mobile phone by typing in *#07# and if it is less than 1.6watt/kg then it is safe, or else you are suggested to change your mobile so as to avoid any harm to you & your family. Yes, the claim is a fact; it is a USSD Code to find out the Specific absorption rate (SAR) of your mobile phone.

What is SAR

Specific absorption rate (SAR) is a measure of the rate of radio frequency (RF) energy absorption by the human body from the mobile cell phone. It is a means to measure the RF exposure characteristics of cell phones to ensure that they are within the safety limits. Note that SAR level is determined at the highest certified power level of the mobile phone device, the actual level of which as the device is operating can be well below the maximum value. Also note that from a single SAR value we cannot reliably compare RF exposure under typical usage conditions of individual cell phone models.

Prescribed SAR Limits

It is a fact when you type in *#07# on your mobile, it displays the SAR value. However, the safely levels vary slightly according to guidelines of various countries. According to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Australian Communications Authority (ACA) Standard, the safe SAR level is 1.6 W/Kg in 1g of tissue that is absorbing the most signal. The European Specification of same is 2.0 W/Kg in 10g of tissue. So, if mobile users find their phone model crosses the prescribed SAR radiation limits, officials advise switching to another phone.

Some users who typed *#07# on their mobile worried as the text “disappears” from their screen, whether their phone does not satisfy radiation safety standards. Officials, however, say people with older handsets may have problems in viewing the SAR levels on their devices. But it does not mean their phones are unsafe. Such mobile users are advised to update the software on their devices. If that does not work, or if the phone in question is not an internet-based handset, one can find the SAR levels in the supported manual of the cell phone manufacturer.

In India and most other countries recognized mobile brands are designed to work within the prescribed radiation limits. The problem is with locally made phone models and some Chinese ones that are not tested for SAR levels. Owing to the increased concern about Mobile phone radiation and its effects on human health, the Government of India has come up with some important safety and protection guidelines for mobile users to follow.
