Analysis:

The video message claims to show why we cannot use Cell Phone near Petrol Pumps. It shows a small experiment using a lump of cooking foil sprinkled with few drops of petrol over it. When the person in the video makes number of calls from a cell phone in the vicinity of the petrol soaked foil, it is shown that the foil catches fire ultimately! Not really!

About the Video

The original source of this video, titled ‘Don’t Use MobilePhones in Petrol Stations’ was uploaded by a YouTube user named ‘F0reverDestiny’ back on 27 July 2007. As of this date, there is no description of the person, and his channel has only 3 other videos. Couple of them being animal observation videos, and another one being an Insurance advertisement – with a title ‘prettygirl shine‘. It should be noted that the video in question was shared in Film and Animation category, the copies of which have been circulating ever since – again, in various other categories like Sports and Entertainment.

It should also be noted that at the end of the video, a link to the website mivzakon.co.il is provided – as if it is going to give more information. However, the website mivzakon is basically a travel related business website offering many other services.

Can Cell Phone Call Blast Petrol Pump?

This has been a long running hoax. There have been several emails and videos claiming to show that cell phone usage in petrol pumps and gas stations can cause severe fire accidents, and even blow up the station. This is not true.

Investigations into the previous incidents have shown that it was the discharge of static electricity through some means that generated spark and ignited vapors coming out of gas while refueling – not the cell phone usage.
You can read about it in detail here. Professionals from petroleum department have explained this time and again. You can watch it in the Mythbusters video shown below.

Conclusion

Considering the aforementioned facts, it is clear that the video in question is not real, but a hoax video created to generate traffic to the website mentioned at the end of the video.

However, in order to avoid any accidents due to static electrical discharge, the Petroleum Equipment Institute (PEI) has stated 3 rules for safe refueling:

1. Turn off engine.
2. Don’t smoke.
3. Never re-enter your vehicle while refueling.

Hoax or Fact:

Hoax.
