WARNING EVERYBODY: New hackers on Facebook and what they write is aggression from you and it’s insulting. It’s really nasty and it appears to come from you. You do not see it, but your friends do. One result of this can be that you will be deleted on your friends list. I just want to say, if you get something that is offensive, malicious, vulgar, etc., it is ABSOLUTELY NOT from me! Copy this and let your friends know. If you get anything like this from me, please tell me and report it immediately to Facebook. Apparently it can come in messages too. Everyone knows me and knows how I am, so please don’t be fooled! PLEASE do NOT share! “COPY AND PASTE” ONLY!

Analysis:

Various messages circulating on Facebook and also via emails come as alert warning users about new hackers on Facebook posting insulting and/or sexual messages on walls of friends. It is to say that the hackers invade Facebook accounts and post the offensive content, as if the account owners are doing it. Apart from ‘alerting’ Facebook friends about this intrusion, they are also asked to copy and paste the message as their Facebook status. The warnings are not facts thankfully.

These messages in various versions warning Facebook users that hackers are invading their accounts to post insulting and/or sexual messages to the walls of their friends have been circulating through emails and social networking websites since few years now. The readers are also asked to share the information on their own timelines to alert other Facebook users about this alleged hacker activity. But thankfully, there is no credible information about such new hacker attacks; there are no reports of such incidents to have taken place. As suggested in the stories, hackers cannot simply access Facebook accounts randomly to post insulting, sexual or other messages. Hacker invasion of accounts can be possible when unsuspecting users install rogue Facebook applications, or they fall prey to clickjacking or phishing scams. Some text in the current stories is similar to messages in the past that warned users about Porn Attack on Facebook.

To conclude, Facebook users need not worry about the aforementioned warnings, and reposting the vague and unsubstantiated messages will do nothing but spread unnecessary fear about security.
