Analysis:
These messages that surfaced on WhatsApp in May 2015 come up with a strange claim that the recipient can get certain GB of internet usage and free prepaid talktime on his mobile phone by simply forwarding the message to a certain number of WhatsApp groups (usually 2 or 3 groups). Similar messages have also been shared on social networking sites like Facebook, Google Plus and YouTube. One such version says KCR, i.e. K. Chandrashekar Rao, the Chief Minister of the Indian state of Telangana, is giving the talktime offer on the occasion of Telangana formation day on 2nd June. The claims are not facts.
According to the story, the recipient has to simply share the message to WhatsApp (or G+) groups in order to get the free internet recharge on his mobile. Notably, the stories usually come with certain links along with the message to be forwarded. Firstly, WhatsApp, G+ or even KCR, the Chief Minister of Telangana, are not giving away any free internet recharge to mobile users for simply forwarding a message; there isn’t any such official announcement. In past, a similar hoax story in circulation said WhatsApp users can earn a good amount of free mobile talktime by simply forwarding an SMS or message to 20 WhatsApp users. What’s more funny, a related story sometimes seen online says that by sending a message to two groups, WhatsApp will automatically charge the user’s mobile:
Send this msg to only 2 groups your battery will charge 100%.. try this magic m also shocked.
So the current claims are plain hoaxes that perhaps started as pranks on WhatsApp, and the stories that come with links are nothing more than marketing stuff that garner users’ attention with attractive ‘offers’ that are not valid. Sharing/forwarding such false stories in WhatsApp groups will not benefit anyone and shall only spam the users.
Hoax or Fact:
Hoax.
