“This Is Tendulkar”
The message claims that Australian cricketer Brad Hogg, after taking the wicket of Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar in a 2004 match gave the ball to him at the end of the match and asked him for autograph. Then the message claims that Sachin Tendulkar put his sign on the ball and wrote a sentence saying – “It Will Never Happen Again”. It is also stated that Brad Hogg could never take Sachin Tendulkar’s wicket again, in 21 matches that he played against him thereafter. Although it is a fact that such an incident did happen, the information provided in the messages is inaccurate and partly hoax.
In 2004, Brad Hogg played only in a single ODI match vs India, that of Videocon Cup where Sachin Tendulkar did not play. The incident the message is referring to did not happen in 2004, it actually happened on 5 Oct. 2007, in a one day international cricket match between India and Australia that was held in Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad, India.
Australia batted first in the match scoring 290/7 in 50 overs, and in response India was all out for 243 in 47.4 overs. Sachin Tendulkar scored 43 and was in fact bowled by Brad Hogg. You can watch Brad Hogg taking Sachin Tendulkar’s wicket in the above video. But after this match Brad Hogg gave his victim Sachin Tendulkar a “photo” of the dismissal to sign, not a ball as mentioned in the messages. Sachin Tendulkar signed the photo and wrote a message beneath it saying – “This will never happen again, Hoggy”. Brad Hogg talked about this incident to The Sunday Age. Mentioned below is what he quoted exactly:
“I got him out in one of the games, and there was a photo of it I asked him to sign for me. He did it and wrote me a message. Underneath his signature, he wrote, ‘This will never happen again, Hoggy.’ It’s nice to have that. It’s a bit of a prized possession. It’s an honour to be on the field with the calibre of player like Sachin Tendulkar. To bowl at him is a great experience. It’s not overawing, just a great experience. If I’m out there, I’m out there to compete against him and make life as hard as possible for him.”
It is to be noted that Brad Hogg ended his international cricket career (both Tests and ODIs) by March 2, 2008. In this time span he faced Sachin Tendulkar in only 7 ODIs and 3 Test matches. Yes, he did not take his wicket again.
