Fact Check:

A story circling online in couple of versions suggests addition of grated, frozen lemons to your foods saying it has certain health benefits and that it kills malignant cells in 12 types of Cancers, including Colon, Breast, Prostate, Lung & Pancreas, also suggesting it is 10,000 times stronger than Chemotherapy. Allegedly the information is coming from one of the largest drug manufacturers in the world (unnamed), and it’s said that we do not know about it because there are laboratories interested in making a synthetic version for huge profits. It is a fact that Lemons (along with peel) have certain health benefits and there are some limited studies suggesting lemons have anti-cancer properties, but the claims that eating frozen lemons destroys 12 types of cancers and it is 10,000 times stronger than Chemotherapy are certainly hoaxes.

Origin of Story: Frozen Lemons Kill Cancer

The story in question seems to have originated from a very similar, widely circulating e-mail since at least 2011, allegedly coming from an Institute of Health Sciences (or the Health Sciences Institute) in Baltimore. According to it, Lemons (not frozen ones with peels) are a proven remedy against cancers of all types and are 10,000 times stronger than Chemotherapy. As a matter of fact, there’s one Health Sciences Institute in Baltimore that describes itself as “dedicated to uncovering and researching the most urgent advances in modern underground medicine,” but we did not find any such claims on their website

In June 2013 Natural News website published an article very similar to the aforementioned email, but about frozen lemons with peels instead of just lemons. Note, the text in the story is somewhat similar to another popular claim that Graviola Tree is 10000 Times Stronger Killer of Cancer than Chemo, which is a mixture of hoax and facts.

Lemons & Cancer: Scientific Facts

It is a fact that lemons (and citrus fruits in general) provide us many useful nutritional and health benefits and they might possess some substantial anti-cancer properties. Lemons and other citrus fruits contain the naturally occurring substances Modified Citrus Pectin and Limonoids, and few studies that looked into their anti-carcinogenic properties have found some promising results, but not enough research is done to prove its effects on Humans. As of this writing, no reputable scientific or medical studies have reported that lemons can definitely act as remedy against cancers of all types, or that they are “10,000 times stronger than chemotherapy”. So the stories saying so are hoaxes.

Nonetheless, lemons can be consumed as an essential component of a healthy diet. Apart from the fact that Lemon peels add flavour and aroma to foods and drinks, according to Livestrong website, they contain many vitamins, minerals and fibre that can give you a nutritional boost, but for significant results, you need to consume large amounts of peel.
