Fact Check:

The message is doing rounds on WhatsApp and other social media platforms for a while. It claims an Indian student from Pondicherry University named Ramu found a home remedy cure for COVID-19 and WHO accepted it for the very first time. It suggests consuming mixture of black pepper powder, honey and ginger juice for 5 consecutive days will suppress the effects of Coronavirus and cure it eventually. Although intake of the mixture of Indian spices can be beneficial to health, the claim as such is a hoax.

WHO Did Not Accept Any COVID-19 Home Remedy Cure from Pondicherry Student

The message became popular as it mentions WHO accepted the home remedy for the very first time and entire world amid COVID-19 pandemic is starting to accept the ‘good news’ in 2020. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) did not approve such home remedy to cure COVID-19. As of this writing, many companies around the world are working on vaccine for the deadly Coronavirus COVID-19. There are no scientific studies to analyze if such Ayurvedic Indian home remedies work in helping or curing COVID-19.

Black pepper, Honey and Ginger juice all have anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Consuming the mixture is in fact a home remedy for fever, cold, cough and sore throat that often occur during seasonal changes. Some of them are also symptoms of COVID-19 infection. Moreover, intake of the Indian spices may help in building body’s immunity to viral or bacterial infections. But again, saying WHO accepted the home remedy and that it will cure COVID-19 completely is not true. So, in case of COVID-19 infection, one must consult a medical professional for proper treatment. He/she may also check with the professional if the home remedy helps in any way.
