A video in wide circulation in India shows some people found Hundreds of EVMs in School Bus without any number plate. Accompanying message in English and Hindi suggests the ruling BJP Party and Election Commission together are planning to Rig the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections. Allegedly, the hundreds of rigged EVMs in School bus and couple of Bolero jeeps were found in Madhya Pradesh (MP) while they were secretly placed in strong room. The fact of the matter, however, is that the video shows an old incident from November 2018. It does not show BJP and Election Commission’s plans to rig Lok Sabha elections.
About the Incident of Finding EVMs in School Bus
The messages accompanying the video in fact link Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and the Election Commission to Rigging Elections by manipulating the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The video shows a School Bus (without any number plate) and two Bolero Jeeps carrying some EVMs locked inside cases. The video actually shows an incident from November 2018 in Sagar City of Madhya Pradesh, India.
Some people found the EVMs in School bus on 30th November 2018, 2 days after Madhya Pradesh Assembly Elections. Some Congress workers started protesting that hundreds of polled EVMs were to be placed in strong room after tampering. Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee also mentioned the incident on Twitter questioning if the attempt to change EVMs is a plan of Government to ensure BJP win.
Response of Election Commission
The video of EVMs in School Bus went viral and Congress workers started protesting. Subsequently, Election Commission of Madhya Pradesh looked into the matter. Responding to the allegations of rigging, official Twitter account of Chief Electoral Officer of Madhya Pradesh said the EVMs in School bus and Bolero jeeps are ‘Reserve’ ones stationed at some Police stations. They would act as replacement for malfunctioning machines during Poll. The Chief Electoral Officer of MP also added that Polled EVMs were neither opened nor were supposed to be opened.
A report on The Times of India website timesofindia.indiatimes.com mentioned the vehicles reached district headquarters in Sagar from Khurai to deliver 37 reserved EVMs – two days after the polling. For the delay in handing over the reserved EVMs, Election Commission in fact suspended a naib Tehsildar. NDTV website ndtv.com reported a clarification from the Chief Electoral Officer saying, “Every EVM has a unique number code for it. The numbers of EVM used in polling have been shared with all political parties. The numbers of reserved EVM’s have been checked by political parties in Sagar districts. Their numbers are different“.
So, the video showing EVMs in School bus is an old incident from November 2018 in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh. Back then Chief Electoral Officer of Madhya Pradesh clarified the EVMs are reserved ones not used in Assembly polling. So, the claim that the finding of EVMs in School bus shows BJP and Election Commission are planning to rig the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections in India is a hoax.
