The messages circulating on Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and other platforms warn people in India that Assam Police Arrested a Congress Leader Carrying Arms to Kill Hindus. Allegedly, the Muslim Congress leader Amjat Ali was carrying arms and bullets in Apple boxes with a plan to kill Hindus and was arrested from Masjid. The story viral on social media accompanies some pictures, which seem to validate the incident. Nonetheless, the claims are not true. Like mentioned, Assam Police did not arrest any Congress leader carrying arms with a plan to kill Hindus.
Not Congress Leader Carrying Arms
Firstly, there are no credible reports of any such incident or Assam Police arresting a Congress leader carrying arms to kill Hindus. The person in pictures is also not any Congress leader by name Amjat Ali. Moreover, the arresting police are in a uniform not native to India.
Old, Police Arrest from Bangladesh
Yes, what you see in couple of the pictures is Bangladesh Police arresting the madrasa teacher Mobarak Hossain for molesting a 13 year old girl, who later committed suicide. The tragic incident took place in May 2018 as reported in Bangla outlets like here, here and here. The other picture showing grenades and bullets around apple box comes from an unrelated incident in late October 2018. The arms and ammunition were recovered by Jammu and Kashmir Police from three suspected militants who were arrested after a brief shootout in the outskirts of Srinagar city.
The fake story saying Assam Police arrested the Congress leader carrying arms in Apple boxes is circulating on social media since at least October 2018. It keeps surfacing on Facebook and Twitter, especially during election period in India.
