A picture in wide circulation on social media purports to show how Congress President Rahul Gandhi is beaten up badly in Amethi. As of this writing, Amethi is Rahul Gandhi’s Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh state of India. The picture in question shows Rahul Gandhi carrying a bruised, black eye and injury mark on forehead. No, the claims are not true – the picture is the result of digital Photoshop alteration.

Amidst the ongoing 2019 Lok Sabha elections in India, Amethi went to poll on 6th of May 2019. Prior to the poll, Rahul Gandhi visited Amethi on 4th May along with his sister Priyanka Gandhi. The Congress President has been frequently sharing photos of his election campaign visits and others along with some live broadcasting on Facebook. Likewise, we did not see any hints of such bruises shown in the picture.

Digitally Altered

Firstly, we did not find such an image with any credible information related to what the messages on social media say. The image in the background of Rahul Gandhi is in fact Mount Kailash. Earlier in August-September 2018, the Congress President went on a Kailash Mansarovar yatra and shared some pictures from there. Notably, on 31st August he tweeted a picture of the Mount Kailash, part of which appears in the background of the picture in question.

At the time, response to one of his tweets from Amit Malviya, BJP’s national Information & Technology in-charge created a controversy. Consequently, in a video reporting of the incident, Republic TV shared a representative image showing Amit Malviya and Rahul Gandhi, with Mount Kailash picture in background.
