People in Saudi Arabia showed Shoes and Slippers in protest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi over Triple Talaq and other atrocities on Muslims in India.
Protest against Indian Prime Minister Modi in Kuwait
A picture message doing rounds on social media purports to show people in Saudi Arabia showed Shoes and Slippers in protest against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The reasons they mention is Modi government’s take over Triple Talaq and other atrocities on Muslims in India. No, the claims are not true – the accompanying image is Photoshopped.
Not Showing Shoes to Modi in Saudi Arabia Protest
The picture messages in question appeared on social media platforms earlier also in 2018, on Facebook, Twitter and others. The stories garnered importance amidst Modi’s frequent visits to foreign nations like UAE and United States. On the other hand, the controversial Triple Talaq (instant divorce) became illegal in India on 1st August 2019.
Coming to the story in question, there are no credible reports of any such protest against Modi in Saudi Arabia. Moreover, the image of protest showing people holding placards with Modi pictures on them is not real. It is a Photoshop making from an old incident in Kuwait back in December 2016. Not Indian PM Narendra Modi, the placard in fact had a picture of the Russian President Vladimir Putin.
A number of Kuwait citizens, including MPs, gathered in front of the embassies area along Gulf Street in protest against the war in Aleppo. Like shown in original image, they also raised their shoes towards the Russian Embassy as a sign of protest.
So, the messages claiming to show Saudi Arabians protested against Modi showing shoes are just fabrications. In contrast to the claims, some Muslim-majority countries like Saudi Arabia (in April 2016), UAE, Bahrain and Afghanistan honored Modi with their highest civilian award.
