Origin of Claims: Iceland Pays Men to Marry

The weird claims in question are circulating online since at least 2016. It became popular after The Spirit Whispers blog published such article in mid-2016. The article opened saying, “Because of the lack of male Iceland Gives $ 5,000 per month for immigrant who Marry Icelandic women“. Notably, in poor grammar and with unrelated content, the article (text below) went on to share the ‘amusing news’. Not True

The fact of the matter is – The Spirit Whispers publishes fake international news stories, promoting them to go viral. Interestingly, after the story went viral, some Icelandic women received lot of marriage proposals and friend requests from strangers on Facebook. Following many inquiries from men about the alleged ‘Get paid to marry Icelandic women’ offer, in August 2016, Iceland’s Foreign Ministry released a statement categorically denying the rumors.

The Foreign Ministry of Iceland states categorically that any and all news items or rumors of this money-for-marriage deal are a hoax and that enquiries to the Ministry or its foreign representations are not required.

Despite the false nature of the story, it keeps reappearing in some online outlets and social media posts, which again are not credible or misleading. For example, a Facebook post in late June 2019 shared a link to a related article on Tales cart website Talescart.com adding description ‘Heaven is Calling’. The Tales cart article published in February 2019, with a breaking title ‘Iceland Is Offering Money To Foreigners For Marrying Their Women- Here’s Why‘ actually explains the story is a hoax.

As far as male-female population is concerned, as of 1 Jan. 2019, the sex ratio of the total population in Iceland was 1.020, i.e. 1,020 males per 1,000 females. It indicates slightly more men than women. To conclude, Icelandic government did not offer to pay foreign men or immigrants to marry their women. That however did not stop some people creating memes around the false story.

Hoax or Fact:

Hoax.
