About the Mysterious Hole in Sky of UAE

In the morning hours of 17th March 2019, residents of Al Ain City in UAE were surprised and shocked at the mysterious sight in sky. Several social media users on Facebook and Twitter shared short videos and pictures of the strange formation in clouds, close to the Oman border. Once the story went viral, some viewers suggested the Giant whirlpool-like hole in the sky could be a cloaked ship, UFO or Alien monitoring Earth. However, what you see in the pictures and videos is a rare natural phenomenon called Fallstreak Hole.

Fallstreak Hole

Yes, the appearance of mysterious hole in Sky of UAE is in fact a Fallstreak Hole, also known as a Holepunch cloud. It has other names like cavum, skypunch, cloud canal or cloud hole. Holepunch cloud occurs when part of the cloud layer forms ice crystals large enough to fall as a ‘fallstreak’. As a result, a large gap, usually circular or elliptical, appears in cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds. Interestingly, as EarthSky website earthsky.org explains about the phenomenon, Airplanes can also create hole-punch clouds in some conditions.

Coming back to the incident, the same day on 17th March 2019, Weather Oman shared some pictures of the rare phenomenon on Twitter. They described it as holepunch cloud, fallstreak hole and called it as supercooled water droplet. Later, Weather Oman also followed up with a video of the beautiful natural phenomenon.

Therefore, the mysterious hole in Sky of UAE on 17th March 2019 is not any UFO spaceship or Alien. It’s a rare natural phenomenon called Fallstreak Hole. Shown below is another beautiful picture of a fallstreak hole, which formed in Austria in August 2008. The video following it is a news report explaining briefly about the formation of a fallstreak hole.
