Fact Check:

The stories doing rounds on social media claim Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian PM Narendra Modi will Visit Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu in Jan 2020. The claims became popular on Facebook and Twitter after few media outlets reported speculations about the visit. They in fact said Modi will accompany the Russian leader to the Southern state of India to have a glimpse of the famous Bull-taming sport. Despite the popularity, the claims are not true.

No Modi and Putin Visit to Jallikattu

Jallikattu is of course a popular traditional, bull-taming event conducted in various parts of Tamil Nadu as part of Pongal celebrations in January. The messages in circulation claim Modi and Putin will visit Alanganallur, a village near Madurai City of Tamil Nadu in order to get a glimpse of the famous sport. Accompanying photographs of Modi and Putin together suggest Modi persuaded Putin for the visit. However, the photographs are from early September 2019 when Modi and Putin met on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum. They in fact discussed ways to improve strategic partnership between India and Russia.

The claims in question are not true because of lack of any credible reports confirming their visit. After the claims became popular, Tamil Nadu Revenue Minister RB Udhayakumar, representing Thirumangalam Assembly constituency in Madurai district, said there was no official confirmation of Putin’s visit. On the other hand, official Twitter handle of Press Information Bureau (PIB) in Gujarat falsified the claim, calling it fake news.

So, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin would not attend the Jallikattu event at Madurai, Tamil Nadu.
