According to certain stories doing rounds online, during a Spacewalk for Olympic Torch show Russian Astronauts were ‘freaked out’ to See Alien UFOs Fly past the International Space Station. So let us analyze whether what is shown and claimed of the space footage is fact or not.

Origin of Claims

On 1 September 2016 Scott Waring of UFO Sightings Daily website UFOsightingsDaily.com published an article and a space footage suggesting to show UFOs near astronauts during Olympic Torch show on space station, sighted on 1 Sept. 2016. Watch the alleged UFOs at 0:25 seconds and again at around 1:17 minutes into the first video. Scott Waring claims that the Russian astronaut sees the two-three UFOs fly in front of him, as he holds the GoPro camera, and he totally loses it and fumbles to the right trying to pull away from the UFOs to keep his balance. He also adds that the two brighter UFOs get frightened by his sudden movement and they both make a 135 degree sharp turn, and head downward.

Actual Facts

The Russian cosmonauts Oleg Kotov and Sergey Ryazanskiy were in fact exhibiting a symbolic Olympic Torch relay in space (outside the Russian module of the ISS) on 9 November 2013 for the 2014 Winter Olympics held in Sochi, Russia. Like shown in the second video of the iconic event in brief, as the two Russian cosmonauts walked in space, they passed the Olympic Torch to each other a few times. After an hour, they returned the torch to the Pirs docking module of the space station. Notably, they filmed the activity using a GoPro camera and other cameras mounted on the exterior of the ISS.

Tireless alien-hunter and UFO blogger Scott Waring has in fact made some hoax claims in the past and Skeptics usually do not agree with him. For example, in past he claimed to have sighted a ‘Rodent on Mars‘ in one of the pictures of NASA, which as a matter of fact, was simply a rock formation. As you can read from couple of articles in Related Stories section below, similar allegations of UFO sightings in space were proved to be Space Debris. In the current case too, Skeptics said the objects which are visible passing by the space station are not Alien UFOs, but are most likely Dust or Space Debris caught in the sunlight (or the reflections). They could also be “Space dandruff,” the particles derived from the body of the spacecraft that float alongside the spacecraft. To support his UFO claims, Scott Waring said it is impossible for a floating piece of debris to preform and take a sharp turn, but easy for a living creature or alien drone to do. NASA, however, has repeatedly said that such sightings happen with surprising regularity, and they are just distortions in the lens, not alien craft parking at the ISS.

So in what seems to be carefully edited video, the claims that the Russian Astronauts are ‘freaking out’ at the sight of Alien UFOs in the space are most certainly hoaxes. What are shown in the video as UFOs could be some kind of Space Debris.
